Fall harvest in Danby
Hike in Vermont's secluded and spectacular Southwestern Region of ancient mountains and hills.

This region bracketed by New York and Massachusetts is one of Vermont's prettiest, with the Mettawee and Battenkill River
valleys punctuated by the looming Taconic Range, with summits above 3000'. One of these peaks is part of the protected Merck Forest and is one of the classic walks. Down in the valley near Dorset, meanwhile, is an off-the-beaten-track ramble to one or two of the abandoned marble quarries, always full of fresh water - swimming hole perfection! These quarries created stone for some of the USA's great buildings. We also trek up Mt. Equinox for fine views of southern Vermont.

The Battenkill River near Arlington is lovely indeed. Norman Rockwell lived and painted here. In fact, our walk on River Road takes us past his old farmhouse and the red covered bridge seen in so many calendars and books. It is well worth following the river's westward flow into New York's Washington County to visit Shushan village's one-of-a-kind covered bridge museum and to see Salem village's beautiful, historic homes.
