From the heart of New
York's High Peaks to the shores of Lake Champlain we cover a lot of ground.
We hike the Ausable
River to Lower Ausable Lake and the overlook at Indian Head, passing spectacular waterfalls
up and back along the way; "find" Lost Pond and
ramble on for sweeping views of the "High Peaks" - among the best in this range!;
visit John Brown's last resting place; stroll around Lake Placid near the Olympic
Center; and hike many other lower and less-visited peaks that afford spectacular
views of the surrounding mountains.
We also explore seldom-visited Split Rock Mountain overlooking Lake
Champlain - with a fine view of Vermont's Green Mountains visible to the east - and see
the remains of old quarrying operations. Another superb walk is done on nearby Coon
Mountain. Elevations range from lake level at 200 ft to 3,000 ft.

We stay at the historic, cozy and quiet Bark Eater Inn near Keene in the
heart of the High Peaks Region.
